Men in Khaki

In general, people would like to volunteer themselves in different ways – teach, coach, sponsor, or doing physical activity. Only very few will really take it up as a passion and get down to doing social service. This pandemic has brought out the best in two of our own from Hosur. Venkat, from our CSR Team, Hosur and V R Balu, HR, H2 are the ones whom we are talking about today.

Venkat, has always liked to wear a police officers’ uniform right from the time he was a child. But destiny had another plan and he went on to work in the manufacturing line. In 2008, when an opportunity came from the Hosur Industries association for candidates to register themselves under the Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Warden Scheme, Venkat jumped at it immediately. And the rest as they say, is history.

When the pandemic broke out, the police wardens were called up for duty. In these times when many are hesitant to even step out of their homes, it is people like Venkat and his tribe who come to the rescue of many others- stranded for various reasons and looking out for someone to help them. Venkat is working closely with the local administration in various initiatives for the development of Hosur. All the services he offers are gratis.

One of our executives, Sundaram, from the VVC Bus Team was a worried man. His son was in a hostel in a residential school in Bangalore. A week had passed since the lockdown and there was no signs of his son coming back. The school authorities were hoping that the lockdown would end soon and since the boy was in class 12, the exams would be restarted. However, with every passing day the situation only got worse. Finally, with no other hope, he reached out to the ERT. The ERT immediately sent out a message to the Hosur team and Venkat took on the responsibility. Being a traffic warden, he was able to travel into Bangalore and to the school where the boy was. When he reached the school, he found that he was the lone hostelite there. Venkat brought him to the MDC at Hosur where he stayed the night. A travel pass was arranged for Sundaram to pick up his son from Hosur. With the interstate borders sealed, Venkat emerged like a savior for Sundaram. The boy was finally home on the 13th of April, thanks to Venkat.

Serving now as Deputy Chief Traffic Warden, Venkat also conducts classes for students on Road Safety, directing the team of 100+ wardens – volunteers of many industries, on their routine duties.

He has organised more than 2 lakhs worth of materials, which was distributed to the interior villages of our Road To School program execution villages benefiting about approximately 750 families, provided the necessary KITS to the team of doctors – 1000 nos of N95 Masks, 15 sets of PPEs, 200 nos of triple layer masks – all which was done with the help of local organizations and service organisations like JCI Hosur and Rotary Club.

He ensured that 21 HIV infected patients of interior villages received their ART Tablets, which was provided by ART Centre, GH, Krishnagiri. In this critical situation, these patients could not come to Hosur / Krishnagiri to get the free tablets from the GH. He assisted them through the Arogya Staff team.

Balu, who is motivated by Venkat, joined hands with him in the Junior Chamber International (JCI) as well as Traffic Warden duty. Balu has become a soft skill trainer and is conducting sessions for the ITI students and college students. As a traffic warden, leading the front row of Republic Parade at the District Level is his specialty. With his NCC experience and sound voice, he leads all the Republic Day parades. Balu spends at least 3 hours at Hosur for implementation of Curfew.

He has been organising refreshments, like butter milk to the various government department staff, who are on the field, providing groceries, vegetables, food to the needy at various locations.

These are the men who wear more than one uniform, and go out in the service of Humanity and we are proud of them in both.

Aapki Jeet. Hamari Jeet.
